Jobs with the highest divorce rate

“An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets, the more interested he is in her.” - Agatha Christie, crime novelist

Witty quotes aside, there are some professions that do indeed seem to be better suited to long-term marriage than others. A statistician, Nathan Yau, recently examined data from the 2015 Census to determine which professions had the highest and lowest divorce rates.

Bartenders and gaming managers most likely to divorce

It appears that many jobs in the service industry are closely correlated with a higher divorce rate. Gaming managers were the most likely to divorce, with bartenders close behind. Other high-divorcing occupations included flight attendants, telemarketers, dancers and choreographers, and licensed vocational nurses. Each profession has approximately a 50 percent divorce rate.

Scientists and actuaries the least likely to divorce

The professions least likely to divorce include actuaries, scientists of all types and chemical engineers. Doctors, dentists and pharmacists also had a relatively low divorce rate, along with clergy. All of these professions were significantly below the median rate of divorce for all professions, which is 36 percent.

Actuaries had the lowest rate of divorce, at 17 percent.

Correlation does not prove causation

It is important to remember that this is raw data, and we cannot draw certain conclusions from it. Just because two things are linked does not mean one thing is a cause of the other. There is not necessarily anything inherent to being a bartender that makes it more likely to divorce.

However, in drawing initial conclusions, there does seem to be a link between income/education and divorce. The higher the income and/or degree received, the less likely the couple was to divorce. Of course, there are a number of exceptions to that, and no profession has less than a 17 percent divorce rate.

Here is the full data.
