If your spouse has recently left you - Part II

During our last post, we began a discussion about what you may need to consider if your spouse has recently left you. We observed that it is important to keep your feet firmly grounded in reality. For while it is normal and healthy to grieve and to hope, if you allow your actions to be dictated by hopes that your spouse will return or hopes that you will never have to deal with him or her again, you will have an unnecessarily difficult time navigating the divorce process.

If you are willing to treat your spouse’s departure as a situation that must be dealt with presently, you may benefit from speaking to an attorney about your situation. An attorney will be best able to advise you of what steps you need to take in order to get the legal and practical aspects of your divorce on track. Similarly, if you are feeling overwhelmed emotionally, it may benefit you to speak with a counselor who can advise you emotionally and mentally.

Additionally, it is important to adopt a forward-thinking attitude once you have accepted your present circumstances. The key to building a healthy and happy future for yourself is setting yourself up for success mentally, emotionally, physically, practically and financially. Only you can truly determine whether it is a good idea for you to take risks in the wake of your spouse’s departure or whether now is the time to work hard and save up for future healthy risk-taking.

Finally, do not be afraid to process your negative emotions as they crop up. Whether that involves working out when you’re angry or seeking support when you are grieving, processing your emotions will help you to build your strength and restore your optimism over time.
