If your spouse has recently left you - Part I

If your spouse has recently left you, you are in need of several things. You need to be gentle with yourself and you need to prioritize taking excellent care of yourself. You need to consider speaking with an attorney and you need to get your financial papers in order. You need many things and you need to do many things. But first and foremost, you need to make sure that your feet are firmly grounded in reality.

This may sound like a harsh statement. After all, it is both normal and deeply human for individuals who have been left by their loved ones to hope and dream that those individuals will either come home or spontaneously combust. But whether you wish that your spouse will come back to you or disappear without a trace, the reality is that you need to deal with the reality of the situation in front of you.

The legal, emotional and practical consequences of your spouse’s decision may have understandably left you reeling. But you will benefit tremendously from placing your feet on the ground and keeping you there, even if you currently feel overwhelmed by the divorce-related “spins.” The sooner that you treat your spouse’s departure as a real life event, the sooner you will be able to deal with it properly in every sense.

If you have yet to speak with an attorney about your situation, please consider doing so. An attorney’s guidance will likely help you to focus your energy in productive and conscious ways. In addition, it may benefit you to keep a few additional tips in mind as you make the transition from married life to a single life. Please check back next week as we will continue our discussion on this important topic in a future post.
