Even if your divorce process is going 'great'...

We have previously written about the potential benefits of a relatively amicable divorce process. If you and your spouse can commit to resolving your differences with the aid of your attorneys and perhaps a mediator, you can avoid many of the costs and stresses traditionally associated with a litigated divorce process. However, it is important to remember that simply because a divorce process is not litigated does not make the process easy to navigate.

Sometimes, well-intentioned loved ones and colleagues may observe that because you are not going through a litigated divorce that you are “lucky” or “doing great.” While it can be nice to hear that your divorce is being received with a positive outlook, it can be a bit maddening to hear that you are lucky to be going through a process that is unquestionably trying.

Even if you are avoiding the challenges of a litigated divorce process, you are still facing the legal hurdles of the divorce process, the emotional challenges of ending your marriage and the practical consequences of transitioning to a single life. It is therefore more than okay that you may feel anything but “lucky” or “doing great” at this point in time.

If the well-meaning words of others are bugging the heck out of you right now, you are not alone. Many individuals navigating divorces have had to deal with the same kind of half-informed sentiments. However, if you feel that you need to vent about these particular challenges and a trusted loved one cannot be found, do not hesitate to reach out to an online support community or a counselor in your area.
