De-stressing your divorce process

Whether your divorce is likely to be relatively amicable or relatively contentious, it will almost certainly be stressful at one point in time or another. Thankfully, there are several things that you can do to avoid certain tensions from escalating and several things you can do to de-stress if tensions have already escalated.

When thinking about de-stressing your divorce process, it is important to take your unique personality and your spouse’s unique personality into consideration. For example, one of the ways in which you can avoid future escalating tensions is to ensure that your communication process is straightforward and low-key. If you and your spouse tend to fight when you are on the phone, consider communicating primarily through email. If you tend to argue when face-to-face, attempt to communicate contentious issues through your attorneys.

It can also be beneficial to ensure that you are organized and that you have easy access to any paperwork, financial records or other documents which may impact your divorce. You may be surprised at how much time and stress you can save yourself by remaining organized.

Finally, it is vitally important that you adjust your perspective when you begin to get heated in front of your spouse or in other situations where venting your feelings could compromise the success of your divorce process. It is normal and healthy to process negative emotions during a divorce. But if you do so in the wrong forum, you can cause yourself more stress than you will alleviate by venting.
