Accessing your greatest strengths during the divorce process

We frequently write about the importance of managing any negative emotions that may be inspired by the divorce process. We have previously observed that when individuals fail to process their negative emotions in healthy ways, they risk compromising their divorce settlement negotiations, their child custody dispute resolution and their future wellbeing. This is not to say that processing negative emotions inspired by the divorce process is always easy. But making healthy emotional growth a priority is necessary for these reasons and many others.

Thankfully, most individuals are stronger than they are generally willing and/or able to admit. Navigating the divorce process may allow individuals to access many strengths that they were not previously sure they possessed. In addition, it is important to note that even if you do not believe that you are a strong individual capable of processing your negative emotions and weathering the divorce process in healthy ways, remaining willing to try will likely produce positive results.

When attempting to access your strengths and attempting to manage your negative emotions in healthy ways, a continued willingness to try to make progress will likely result in progress. Willingness is a strength, in and of itself.

Similarly, patience with yourself is critical at this time. Navigating divorce-related emotions and the divorce process itself is not easy. You will not “win” the day every day. However, if you remain patient and gentle with yourself while remaining open and willing to process your situation in healthy ways, you will likely not only access your strengths, you will continually build upon them.
