Is it time for you and your spouse to part ways?

While some couples opt to part ways after a single traumatic event has occurred, most couples spend quite a bit of time trying to make their marriage work before eventually deciding to divorce. It can be understandably difficult to know what the healthiest path may be for you and your family. One day, divorce can seem like an unthinkable option whereas other days the opportunity to move forward alone seems like the right choice.

If you are struggling with the concept of divorce, it may help you to speak with a counselor. If you are not in a position to seek counseling, processing your feelings on long walks alone, by journaling or by speaking with a trusted loved one may help you focus. As you begin to navigate your options, it may be helpful to keep certain red flags in mind.

If your spouse has become abusive, there is little likelihood that his or her abusive behavior will ever change significantly without serious counseling. Unless your spouse is immediately willing to seek help, it is likely healthiest for you to separate from your marriage as no person deserves the consequences of an abusive partnership.

In addition, if your spouse is unfaithful, extremely distant or otherwise behaves in ways that make you feel unloved and unworthy, you may need to move on from your marriage. Unless your spouse is willing to commit to seeing the effects of counseling through, it may be time to move forward in healthier and ultimately happier ways alone.
